Ferrari exclusivity to evaporate with brand dilution - New Dino model a question of when, not if

That is what the head of FIAT and Ferrari chairman Sergio Marchionne said to Autocar. Keep in mind this new Dino rumor has been going on for about a decade now. The main difference with this rumor today though is that the man who was at the helm of Ferrari for 23 years is gone.

FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) is interested in one thing above all else and that is profit. Why do you think they started selling shares off of Ferrari? To get a market value for the brand as well as generate revenue. That provided a nice cash infusion.

You know what else would provide quite a bit of cash flow? A 'cheap' Ferrari. The problem is it would also ruin the Ferrari image of exclusivity. They may have found a loophole by using the Dino name.

It is unknown at this time if it will be called the Ferrari Dino or if they will position Dino as as a sub-brand. What is likely is for them to borrow a turbo V6 from Maserati and make the car an entry level mid-engine vehicle. They could price it in the same range as the McLaren 570S or even the cheaper 540C.

As the man who is in charge said, it's a question of when and not if. This is still a few years away at best. Perhaps ex-ceo Luca Cordero di Montezemolo had a point when he quit over a dispute regarding Ferrari's direction.

Marchionne is playing this off saying he wants to keep Ferrari exclusive and that this will not be a 'cheap' Ferrari. However, that's the exact opposite of what this will do. Just remember, in the end, if they can make a bunch of money at the expense of exclusivity they will do it despite the hollow words from the CEO.
