    • Ferrari closed the gap - 488 Pista vs. McLaren 720S highway runs

The Pista is the real deal. Is it as fast as a McLaren 720S? No, but it is close enough for Ferrari to longer be embarrassing themselves considering what their cars cost versus McLarens. Especially when McLaren offers more exotic materials and lightweight construction for far less money.

If you want to hang with or beat McLarens while having a prancing horse badge you will need to step all the way up to a 488 Pista.

Skip to the 3:45 mark in the video below and you will see a highway pull where the Pista gets the jump but the 720S still passes. The 720S does not open a large lead though, it's close with a definite edge going to the McLaren.

In a subsequent run the Pista gets an even bigger jump and the 720S can not run it down. When the 720S gets the jump it is over for the Pista.

Run after run shows they are well matched with the McLaren having a slight top end edge.

Ferrari knew they had to get close and they did. Now watch McLaren respond and blow them away yet again.

Did the dummy in the Ferrari really keep his windows down for top-end runs while running against a windows up car?

Edit: Watched it again... they look up... never mind. Might not be used to windows so clean Click here to enlarge

When does the 488 replacement come out? Ferrari needs to make a leap forward to catch up to McLaren.

The F8 Tributo should be out early next year. It's pretty much a reskinned Pista.

Really? That’s disappointing to hear, but I guess it’s what one would expect at this point with Ferrari. Least they make the 812 super fast, love to see that with a little weight stripped out.

The 488 itself was a 458 refresh and not a whole new platform.

It's odd Ferrari isn't investing in a brand new mid-engine architecture but they are launching a new supercar so that is probably why.
